Surplus Laws exists to make sure the people who are owed money after a foreclosure or tax sale actually get it — before it disappears into an unclaimed funds registry or reverts to the state or the bank.
Our story doesn't begin with surplus funds. It begins in the middle of the financial crisis, when we were on the debt collection side of the table. Every day we watched families who had already lost everything — their homes, their savings, their sense of security — get chased down for what little they had left. We were part of a system that profited from people at their lowest point, and it didn't sit right with us.
We moved away from collections and into service plans built around actually helping homeowners get back on their feet, instead of squeezing them for what they owed.
We partnered with a handful of firms and helped them recover a combined $5 million for homeowners who didn't even know money was owed to them. That was the moment everything clicked, and we officially entered the surplus funds space.
We've assisted more than 1,000 families in getting back money that was sitting unclaimed. Every one of those cases is a family that didn't know they were owed anything until someone told them.
That discomfort in 2008 became the reason we changed direction — and the reason this site is free to use. Surplus funds work is the opposite of collections: it's finding people money they didn't know was theirs, and making sure they get it in time.
